Are attacks against law firms on the rise?

The Citigroup Center in San Francisco recently issued a report directed to bank employees warning of the potential for cyber attacks.  The internal report expressed disapproval of the way many law firms are handling cyber attacks on their networks and related web sites. Why aren’t such attacks being documented? Citigroup believes many law firms simply do not disclose these breaches.  Citigroup stated:

“Due to the reluctance of most law firms to publicly discuss cyber intrusions, and the lack of data breach reporting requirements in general in the legal industry, it is not possible to determine whether cyberattacks against law firms are on the rise”.

Reports of cyber attacks on larger corporations are not new to the news feed.  In fact, from all reasonable observations, they seem to be on the rise, in general, with auditors and strategic communication firms being likely targets. It is only reasonable then to believe that attacks on law firms are imminent, if not already in progress, due to the sensitive (and potentially profitable) information that they contain. Privileged information that could be of great value to other corporations consists of details of patent applications, mergers and acquisitions for starters.

What makes corporations such as law firms susceptible to cyber intrusion? John Carlin, who serves as the assistant Attorney General for national security claims,

“There are still a lot of companies that try to go it on their own. They try to circle the wagons.”

Mr. Carlin urged law firms to report cyber hacks (even though they are not required by law to do so) and make law enforcement aware of the breaches instead of regarding them as a “badge of shame” that is to be hidden from the public eye.

How Can Law Firms Secure Protection?

As Mr. Carlin suggested, corporations often try to handle the vital area of cyber security on their own instead of seeking outside help. As a result, corporate clients are at risk of having their crucial, privileged data compromised.  Such a misstep on the part of a law firm that experiences an unfortunate attack can cost the firm dearly in lost confidence and, as a result, some of its best clients. The wisest approach any law firm could take, then, is to commit the handling of its cyber security to a trusted team of experts who have the time, the resources and the experience to ensure a high level of cyber protection.
